Can you tell the difference between self-confidence and resilience, and is there any, to begin with?

"Self-confidence? Resilience? Are they not the same, in the end?" he asks, while looking at me dead  serious in the eyes, and yet with a playful and a little bit mischievous smile.
I smile back, while looking at him. And not just because he's quite hot.

Funny enough, I never thought about the matter before.
Until now, it was very clear to me that self-confidence and resilience are very different things, even if they are related, in the end.

[Sometimes, you can find wisdom where you would not expect it...
Like in some colorful postcards on the wall:
Tough situations make you resilient. Or they can break you.
Awesome plans give you self-confidence, or can you make them,
because you are self-confident in the first place?]

How would you define these two superpowers?

To me, self-confidence means being sure about yourself, your own skills, your value and what you can offer yourself and others and, last but not least, being sure about your self-efficacy.
Are you sure that you can get s**t done? Daring to try new things is your thing, it doesn't matter how they turn out? How about being brave (and cheeky) enough to accost someone you don't know and strike up a conversation?

Resilience, on the other hand, is what you need to bounce back from some big, unpleasant challenge and to be back on your feet as soon as you can, to deal with the curveballs that life throws at you and to do it as elegantly and classy as a modern Joe DiMaggio could, to embody (and live by) the so-called post-traumatic growth.

["There is no education like adversity,
Benjamin Disraeli was used to saying.
Do you need self-confidence or resilience,
in order to rise above it and thrive?]

Do you own your life circumstances or do you let your life circumstances own you? Can you transform your setbacks in comebacks? How about being rejected, let down, hurt? How about fighting a disease and coming back stronger than ever, or not being willing to give up even if, in the short run, your situation seems hopeless?
Like they say... Will you bend or will you break?

will you bend or will you break?

Sure, resilience is all about coping with difficulties and problems with toughness and bravery,  recovering in a fast and effective way and not letting yourself be defined by adversity, mistakes, calamities, misfortunes, and bumps in the road.
Of course, in order to recover fast and to stay cool and flexible while doing so, you need some self-confidence as well.

But are they really the very same thing?
What do you need the most, in order to deal with your own personal Pandora's box?

This one is for Patrick.
