I like to think that we can truly understand a person while looking at how they act and react in difficult times. This is true both for them and for ourselves.
Being easy-going, sunny, and kind is easy when everything is going great.
Who are we when things are taxing and puzzling instead?
And who are the people around us in those situations? And in other situations?
That's the tricky part, and where so many misunderstandings happen.
Some people can be there for you when you are down, and be missing in action the rest of the time, like if they would be an adrenaline junky looking for some action and for a chance of feeling the hero in your life for a couple of minutes.
Other people can be there for you as long as you are on top of the world and disappear as soon as things get complicated.
The ones you should be counting on are the ones able to be there for you both when everything is bliss and also when everything seems desperate at first, because you may want to go for consistency and reliability.
Those are the ones I call "the rock".
By the way, you can be your own rock too.
I hope you know this already.

[There is this old song by Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band,
Like A Rock... Do you know that one?]
