Mandy Patinkin, unforgettable screen and theatre actor, in my mind now and forever the Spanish swordsman Inigo Montoya from The Princess Bride, is known for quoting his wife of forty years, Kathryn Grody, regarding the family motto: ‘Comparison leads to violence.’
Mandy and Kathryn could have a point here.
People are different, circumstances are different, places and times are different. A comparison brings together somehow forcefully things that don't belong together... and creates a false perspective on situations and progression as if everything would be related and connected on the same path.
Most of the time, this is not the case and this belief, far away from motivating someone to do better, can generate frustration and despair instead.
[Do you want a comparison at any cost?
Compare how you are now with how you were two years ago.
How much did you learn since then?]
Coaching question of the day:
"Which comparison should you give up, in order to move forward with your plans?"
